Coach Lincoln Riley of Oklahoma regretted the recent firings of Big 12 colleagues Matt Wells and Gary Patterson on Tuesday, saying the timing was bad for college football.
Despite a 5-3 record, Wells was dismissed by Texas Tech on Oct. 25, with athletic director Kirby Hocutt indicating a change was “inevitable” before the conclusion of the season. Patterson’s 20-plus years as the Horned Frogs’ coach came to an end on Sunday, with AD Jeremiah Donati claiming he offered Patterson the opportunity to stay on until the conclusion of the season, but he rejected.
Riley’s voice trailed off as he remarked, “To see two people out in the middle of the season like that, one with a winning record and one who is unquestionably the greatest coach in the history of his institution.” “I don’t know what to make of Gary Patterson’s decision to retire in the midst of the season. To be quite honest, I felt nauseated when I heard the news. I understand it’s a difficult industry. We’re big males who can live with big-boy judgments, and our jobs are examined. But man, I don’t know what he did at that facility and why he didn’t even complete the year.”
Patterson was the second-longest tenured current head coach in the FBS, behind only Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, who took over in 1999. Patterson went 181-79 at TCU and was the second-longest active head coach in the FBS, trailing only Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, who took over in 1999. Between 2012 and 2017, the Horned Frogs went 51-27, but since then, they’ve only gone 21-22.

Because of the recruiting schedule and a desire to name Patterson’s successor before the December signing period, which starts Dec. 15, Donati, the TCU AD, stated Tuesday that the move was made quickly.
