Games Inbox: Is Skyrim overrated or not?

Skyrim is one of the most popular games in recent memory. The very first Elder Scrolls game has been around for 13 years and it’s still a top seller on Steam with over 200,000 concurrent players at peak hours. Is Skyrim worth playing?

The “game inbox” is a new feature that was recently added to the Xbox One. The feature allows users to chat with other players about games. There are also some interesting discussions going on in the game inbox.

Is Skyrim deserving of a better fate? (Photo courtesy of Bethesda)

One reader suggests High Score on Netflix, while the Tuesday Inbox thinks that PS5 exclusive Returnal is one of the finest games of the year.

There will be no additional remasters. GC gives a candid evaluation of Skyrim, however I believe the question isn’t whether the game deserves to be considered a classic, but whether it deserves to be preserved in this permanent zombie condition, pulled out of its grave every other year for another remaster, VR edition, or whatever. Skyrim was a masterpiece that earned every award it received when it was released in 2011, but it’s now ten years later, and it’s understandably looking less stunning, particularly in areas like melee combat and facial animation, which were always lacking.

I don’t want to play the game since I have so many fond memories of it, and I’m not sure why we’ll have to wait another 15 years for a sequel. After all this time, the absolute least Bethesda could have done is offer the game a true remake, not merely a remaster that depends almost exclusively on fans for its additional material, as far as I can tell.

I don’t really want to criticize Bethesda, or at least not any more than others, particularly Rockstar. At the very least, the Skyrim remaster is merely laziness. The GTA one is both sluggish and inoperable! Seriously, businesses must put an end to this. People speak about Rockstar’s image being tarnished, but Nintendo has done the same thing with its ultra-lazy Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection.

If a studio wants to put in the effort to create a high-quality remaster or remake, such as Demon’s Souls for PlayStation 5, that’s acceptable. However, these low-budget remakes of iconic games must come to an end. It’s demeaning to players, game creators, and the games themselves. Casper

Efficiency is a top priority. I’d want to react to Tim’s letter that arrived in my email on Friday.

To supplement my internal SSD drive, I use a normal 2TB hard disk.

Things I may want to return to but don’t want to wait for a lengthy download period are placed on the external drive, while games I play often are stored on the internal disk. Then I just utilize the move feature to switch things around as needed. While not ideal, since certain games take a long time to switch over, it is still far faster than downloading a game from the beginning.

It also works well for saving Xbox One games on an external hard drive and running them from there, freeing up space on the SSD. Dirtystopout PS: Did you see my Reader’s Feature on my Dark Souls 3 experience? I was really looking forward to seeing it and hearing what others had to say about it.

GC: We did, but the more time-sensitive Reader’s Feature always takes priority.

It’s a piece of history. Okay, this isn’t new, but I’m watching High Score on Netflix again and loving it just as much as I did the first time around.

It’s a must-see for everyone here who hasn’t seen it yet (which is probably not many). It’s a six-part series narrated by Charles Martinet that traces the history of video gaming. It’s geared for the American market, but it’s still fantastic. fman00

GC: For those who don’t know, Charles Martinet is Mario’s voice actor. We haven’t watched the program, but we’re guessing he doesn’t have an accent.

Sailing by plane I’m just writing to express how much I’m loving GTA: San Andreas with Game Pass on my Xbox One X. Though I mostly wanted to play Vice City, I felt that £50-60 (depending on platform) was a little excessive for this collection. When you factor in the fact that San Andreas was part of Game Pass, you’re looking at £50-60 for just the two additional titles. It seems to have been a major oversight not to enable you to purchase them for £20 apiece.

Many people seem dissatisfied with the game’s quality; I can only speak for San Andreas, but I believe it has the proper amount of graphics and gameplay enhancements. The only big issues I’ve seen are terrible stutters during checkpoint races and the strange fact that an aircraft can view the whole area. They should’ve thrown some haze in there.

According on what I’ve read, it now utilizes the Unreal Engine. I’m astounded that a whole game can be ported to a new engine 20 years after it was first released. I once watched a video of someone doing something similar with The Simpsons: Hit & Run, and he didn’t even have the source code. What an incredible moment to be alive. EvilMoomin PS: The automobile handling in the GTA trilogy is flawless, and I refuse to hear anybody say anything negative about it. On the other hand, aircraft…

There aren’t many bugs. I’m a 50-year-old gamer with a few miles under my belt, but I don’t know whether I’m alone in this, but I’m really enjoying GTA. I played the original, and this is just spruced up enough for me without straying too far from the original.

I’ve played for hours and only had one bug, so I’m not sure whether this is a case of frenzied bandwagon jumping. Atomicbud is a neologism for (gamertag)

GC: Maybe you’re not counting any more small hiccups, but it doesn’t reflect our experience.

This is not the last chapter. After the unfortunate launch of GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition, it seems like Rockstar Games has assured the early days of the company’s demise. The game has already been cracked and hacked, and it has now been confirmed that Rockstar has left all of the modifying tools in the game, as well as all of the tracks that have not been deleted.

Those on PC, however, may still play the game thanks to a workaround explained in this video. I’m simply hoping that Rockstar will immediately address these flaws, as well as requesting that Grove Street Games produce a patch as soon as possible to address the game’s many difficulties.

To have all of these things go wrong at launch for one of Rockstar’s most successful trilogies is humiliating to say the least, and might very well have signaled the start of the company’s multi-billion-pound demise for letting something like this to occur. Be rotting, gaz (gamertag)

GC: I’m sorry, but that’s not going to happen.

Returnal on a regular basis I only want to laud Returnal’s praises; it gives back that addictive sensation of playing. I also realized that even when I wasn’t playing, I was thinking about the game, which is unusual for a single-player game.

As a result, thank you for promoting it, Metro team; keep up the fantastic job. If you’re on the fence about whether or not to give it a go, I’d say go for it; now that you can save in the middle of a run, it’s not as difficult as it formerly was. That may have lowered the tension, but it’s still fantastic material. But, yes, it’s one of my favorites, a wonderful blend of fantastic design and amazing gameplay, which is what it’s all about for me. Carlos

the story’s boundaries Over the weekend, I completed Metroid Dread and have to admit that my first opinions of the game haven’t altered much, and that it’s still a fantastic game. I’m still perplexed by the concerns about a more detailed plot. For a Metroid game, the plot was fair and adequate. This begs the issue of what consumers truly want from video games in terms of narrative, storyline, and conversation.

I haven’t had high expectations, and to be honest, I haven’t seen anything to indicate differently. If I want better narratives and conversation, I’d rather watch a movie, read a book, or watch a TV show, all of which are more effective means for delivering dialogue and plot.

The game should be chastised for having poor controls while leaping, since the screw attack wouldn’t always work and the shine spark was cumbersome to use. Speaking of controls, attempting to shoot the rockets at precise angles with the default button configuration caused hand cramps; I know I should have altered it, but I grew so accustomed to it that it was impacting me only in monster battles. And why, oh why, do we have to battle bosses using QTEs? It irritates me to no end. This is true for any game, not only Dread. You mistime one QTE and lose a significant amount of energy as a result. Kazam, Alek PS: I think the Flash Shift move is one of the best moves in gaming history. Is there a better move than this?

also-rans in your inbox In response to my comment from last Thursday regarding the free game on the Epic Games Store, they have now added another free game, Tiny. Tina’s Assault On Dragon Keep is a one-shot adventure set in the Wonderlands. It will be accessible until 4 p.m. on Thursday, November 18th. Take advantage of it while you still have the chance. Why didn’t Rockstar consider to remove the Hot Coffee code from the remaster? Was everything hurried out in a matter of days? I get how that feels, but how could it not have been the first thing they did, and then they double-checked it a hundred times? After all of this, I’ve lost all faith in Rockstar. Cameron

The topic for this week’s Hot Topic is Reader Helix suggested the topic for this weekend’s Inbox, asking, “What is the most disappointing video game you’ve ever experienced at launch?”

It’s easy to get excited about a major new release, but which one left you the most dissatisfied, and why? Was the game not what you anticipated, and do you think its marketing or feedbacks misrepresented it?

How serious were any technical issues at launch, and how fast were they resolved? How forgiving are you of launch-day faults, and how have you adjusted to the fact that many games don’t perform correctly at first?
