Vrchat Avatar Guide

Untitled design (82)

This week I have decided to make a guide for vrchat avatars. What are avatars in VR Chat? Avatars are the 3D models that represent you in VR Chat when you play in lobbies or in one of many minigames/scenes.

The avatar choices are endless, but the following is a list of helpful tips and tricks to help you make your ideal representation in VR Chat

Where to get vrchat avatars

VR Chat has an avatar creation system, but it is somewhat limited. You cannot import your own models or textures into vrchat (yet). However, there are many creators in the community that create amazing avatars for you to use.

Once you have found an avatar you want to use, download it and put it somewhere on your computer for safe keeping. Once you’ve got the avatar downloaded, you need to know how to get it into VR Chat.

How to create a new avatar in vrchat

1. Open up VR Chat and go to the Main Lobby ( if you don’t know how just type Main in your menu bar and click on Main Lobby )

2. Once you’re here select: World–> Edit My Character

3. Here is the avatar window, the default avatar is Gordon Freeman during his escape from Black Mesa. You can choose this avatar by clicking on it and then clicking “Use Selected Avatars Default Avatar”

4. Select the import button at the bottom of the window

5. Look for your avatar . vobj file you saved from before. Usually you will find these files in a folder called “Avatar”. This is a simple example, but everything you need for importing a new avatar is the name of the file and where you put it. If you’re ever having trouble finding your avatar feel free to ask me or another VR Chat member if we can help locate it

How to change your avatar’s appearance

Now that you have your avatar in vrchat, you can now change its appearance.

1. Open up VR Chat and go to the Main Lobby ( if you don’t know how just type Main in your menu bar and click on Main Lobby )

2. Now select: World–> Edit My Appearance

3. This is the avatar window, here you can change almost anything about your avatar. You can also save your changes by clicking “Save Current Appearance”

4. This is the color palette, here you can choose any color you want for your avatar (This uses Hexidecimal (RGB) values)

5. Now to change the hair color, this is under the “Hair” section. Here you can select any hair color you could think of (This uses Hexidecimal (RGB) values)

6. This is the eyes section and it has three different sections for eye type. These control eye color, pupil size, and how much “reflective light” should appear in the eyes.

7. This is the mouth section and it has six different sections for mouth type, this controls how open or closed your mouth is as well as being able to control lips color by selecting from a list of colors

How to use voice chat and emotes

Everyone in VR chat has a voice chat toggle. This is the button on the bottom of your screen with a speaker and a “V”

This is how you communicate with other players in vrchat, feel free to talk over each other because everyone can hear at once! I’d recommend lowering your volume before chatting though if you’re in a loud area.

Conclusion

VR chat is a fun place for people of all ages. We want you to have the best experience possible so if anyone has any questions feel free to ask us, don’t be shy!
